About Cathedral Square
The open heart of the Old Town at the foot of Gediminas Hill, framed by the neoclassical cathedral, its freestanding bell tower, and a statue of Grand Duke Gediminas.
Cathedral Square (Katedros aikštė) is the central open space of Vilnius Old Town, set at the foot of Gediminas Hill near where the Vilnia meets the Neris. It took its present form as a formal public square in the 19th century, during the reconstruction of the cathedral. The square is dominated by Vilnius Cathedral and its freestanding bell tower, whose rounded lower section is medieval and is thought by scholars to have belonged to the Lower Castle's defensive wall.
An equestrian monument to Grand Duke Gediminas, the legendary founder of the city, was unveiled here in 1996. The paving was renovated in 2000 with light granite, and red granite traces the outline of the former Lower Castle fortifications. A pavement tile reading 'Stebuklas', or 'miracle', marks the spot remembered as the Vilnius end of the 1989 Baltic Way. The square lies within the UNESCO-listed Old Town.
Did you know? The belfry beside the cathedral rises about fifty-two metres, roughly fifty-seven with its cross. Its lowest rounded storey is medieval, and scholars think it once served as a defensive tower of the Lower Castle wall.
