About Vaduz Castle
Vaduz Castle, the home of the Prince of Liechtenstein, a medieval castle on a rock terrace about 120 metres above the town, seen only from outside along a signed path.
First documented in 1322, the castle was burned by the Swiss in 1499 and strengthened with round bastions in 1523-1529. The princes bought it with the County of Vaduz in 1712, rebuilt it in 1904-1914, and have lived here since 1938.
The castle is a private residence and cannot be visited inside. A signed path climbs from the Städtle in about 10 to 30 minutes, past the Känzile viewpoint. On 15 August the national celebration takes place on the meadow below.
Did you know? Swiss troops set Vaduz Castle on fire on 12 February 1499, during the Swabian War; it was rebuilt and given two round bastions in 1523-1529.
