About Gutenberg Castle
Gutenberg Castle in Balzers, a castle on a rock hill in the south of Liechtenstein, with a 12th-century core rebuilt in 1905-1912 by Egon Rheinberger in a romantic medieval style.
People lived on this hill from the Stone Age, and a castle grew here from the 12th century. It was a Habsburg outpost against the Swiss, fell into ruin after 1748, and was rebuilt by the artist Egon Rheinberger between 1905 and 1912; the state has owned it since 1979.
The outer bailey is free and open all year. The chapel and rose garden open on Sundays from May to October, and the interiors only on booked guided tours in that season; the castle is closed from November to April.
Did you know? In February 1499, during the Swabian War, Swiss troops besieged Gutenberg Castle, then a Habsburg outpost on the border, but they could not take it.
