About Fürstensteig
The Fürstensteig, the Prince's Path, a famous mountain trail of 1898 cut into the cliffs of the Alpspitz high above the Rhine valley, secured with ropes and needing a head for heights.
The path was opened in 1898, paid for by Prince Johann II and driven by the local politician Carl Schädler. It starts at Gaflei, at about 1,400 metres above Triesenberg, and crosses the north-west face of the Alpspitz.
It is a mountain path, not a via ferrata, with wire ropes and railings at exposed spots. The short circuit takes about two and a half hours. It needs fitness, sure feet, a head for heights and dry weather, and it can be blocked by snow or ice.
