About Nea Paralia (New Waterfront)
The reimagined seafront promenade running south from the White Tower, a long landscaped walk of themed gardens, cycle paths and sculpture, crowned by Zongolopoulos's steel Umbrellas and famous for its sunsets.
The Nea Paralia, the New Waterfront, is the landscaped seafront promenade stretching south from the White Tower along the Thermaic Gulf. Redesigned by the architects Nikiforidis-Cuomo, who won an international competition in 2000, and built in stages and finished around 2013 to 2014, it is a sequence of themed gardens, broad paving and a cycle path, with wooden decks stepping out over the water, about three kilometres long.
Its landmark is 'Umbrellas', the cluster of stainless-steel umbrellas on slanting poles by the sculptor George Zongolopoulos, installed on the front in 1997 when Thessaloniki was European Capital of Culture, and one of the most photographed artworks in the city. Facing west across the gulf, the promenade is the city's favourite place to watch the sun set, with the mountains, and on clear days Mount Olympus, on the far shore.
