About Heptapyrgion (Yedi Kule)
The hilltop fortress crowning the upper town, a Byzantine and Ottoman citadel of ten towers that spent a century as the city's grim prison, sung in Greek rebetika songs and now a monument with wide views.
The Heptapyrgion, in modern Greek Eptapyrgio and popularly Yedi Kule, is the fortress that crowns the acropolis at the top of Thessaloniki. Its name means 'Fortress of Seven Towers' in both Greek and Turkish, though it actually has ten; the northern towers date to the late fourth century and the southern ones to around the twelfth, with later Byzantine and Ottoman rebuilding. An inscription records a restoration by the first Ottoman governor in 1431.
From the 1890s the old citadel was turned into a prison, and for nearly a century it was the city's main jail, notorious for holding political prisoners through the dictatorships and the civil-war years of the twentieth century. Its Turkish name, Yedi Kule, echoes through the rebetika songs of the Greek underworld. The prison closed in 1989; the site is now a monument, with excavations, an early church and sweeping views over the city.
Did you know? The Heptapyrgion's name means 'Fortress of Seven Towers' in Greek and Turkish, though it has ten; it was probably named after the Yedikule fortress in Constantinople. Its oldest towers date to the late fourth century.
