About Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki
A museum in a rare survivor of the 1917 fire that tells the story of the Sephardic Jews of Thessaloniki, who made it a great Jewish city, and of its destruction in the Holocaust.
The Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki occupies a townhouse of 1904 on Agiou Mina Street, one of the few buildings of the old Jewish quarter to survive the Great Fire of 1917, once home to a Jewish newspaper. Opened in 2001 and run by the city's Jewish Community, it traces the Sephardic Jews who settled here after their expulsion from Spain in 1492 and who for centuries formed a majority or near-majority of Thessaloniki, making it one of the foremost Jewish cities in the world.
The ground floor gathers tombstones from the vast Jewish cemetery destroyed under German occupation; the upper floor tells the community's life from antiquity to the twentieth century, with a hall devoted to the Holocaust. About fifty thousand Jews lived in the city in 1943; more than forty-five thousand were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau between March and August of that year, and roughly ninety-six per cent of the community was murdered. A memorial wall carries the names of the dead.
