About Ladadika
The old market and warehouse quarter by the port, named for its oil merchants, its low 19th-century buildings saved from demolition and revived into a lively maze of tavernas, bars and cobbled lanes.
Ladadika is the old market quarter beside the port of Thessaloniki, long one of the city's chief marketplaces. Its name comes from 'ladi', the Greek word for oil, after the many oil shops and warehouses that once filled its lanes; goods came up from the harbour to be stored and traded here, supplying much of northern Greece. Many Jewish residents lived in its lower streets, and before the First World War it was also the city's red-light district.
By the early 1980s, after the 1978 earthquake, the quarter had fallen into decay and faced demolition. In 1985 the Ministry of Culture protected it as a heritage district, saving its low 19th- and early 20th-century buildings, and from the late 1980s it was revived. The old oil stores are now tavernas, bars and restaurants along cobbled, pedestrian lanes, making Ladadika one of the liveliest places to eat and drink in the city.
