The Church of Hagia Sophia, the Holy Wisdom, is a domed Byzantine church of about the eighth century, one of the oldest standing in Thessaloniki, modelled on the great Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and marking a transition between the domed basilica and the later cross-in-square church. Its glory is inside: a dome mosaic of the Ascension of Christ, with Mary, two angels and the Apostles below, and in the apse an enthroned Virgin and Child on a plain gold ground.
The church became the Latin cathedral after the Fourth Crusade took the city in 1205, and a mosque, keeping its name as Ayasofya, after the Ottoman conquest of 1430, until Thessaloniki returned to Greece in 1912. Damaged by fire in 1890 and again affected by the fire of 1917, it was restored over the twentieth century, the dome not finally until 1980. It is one of the UNESCO-listed Palaeochristian and Byzantine Monuments of the city.
