About Rotunda of Galerius

A colossal Roman round building of about 306 AD, raised for the emperor Galerius, then a church with golden early-Christian mosaics and later an Ottoman mosque whose minaret still stands; a UNESCO monument.

The Rotunda is a massive cylindrical brick building about 24.5 metres across, with walls more than six metres thick and a dome some 30 metres high, raised around 306 AD on the orders of the Roman emperor Galerius, probably as his mausoleum, though he died and was buried elsewhere. In the late fourth century it was turned into a Christian church and lined with superb golden mosaics, of which fragments survive, including a band of saints before golden buildings.

It served as a church for more than a thousand years, then became a mosque in 1590, the Mosque of Suleyman Hortaji Effendi, which is why a tall minaret still rises beside it, the only Ottoman minaret left in the city. Reconsecrated after 1912 as the Church of Agios Georgios, it is among the earliest Christian monuments anywhere, and one of the Palaeochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki listed by UNESCO in 1988.

Did you know? The Rotunda was raised around 306 AD for the emperor Galerius, probably as his mausoleum, though he was buried elsewhere; its walls are more than six metres thick, which has helped it survive earthquakes.
