About Church of Hagios Demetrios
The great basilica of Saint Demetrius, patron of Thessaloniki, built over the Roman bath where he was martyred; famous for early Byzantine mosaics and a crypt, rebuilt after the 1917 fire; a UNESCO monument.
The Church of Hagios Demetrios is the great sanctuary of Saint Demetrius, patron saint of Thessaloniki, who tradition says was martyred here around 306 AD in a Roman bath. The present five-aisled basilica follows the plan of a church of 629 to 634, itself built over earlier ones, and it may have been larger than the city's own cathedral. Six precious mosaic panels survive from before the age of Iconoclasm, showing the saint with the officials who restored the church and with children.
Beneath the church lies a crypt, the Roman bathhouse held to be the place of the saint's imprisonment and death, with a holy spring and a small shrine; buried in Ottoman times, it was rediscovered after the fire of 1917. Under the Ottomans the church was the Kasimiye Mosque; the Great Fire of 1917 gutted it, and it was rebuilt over following decades and reconsecrated in 1949. It is one of the UNESCO-listed monuments of the city.
