About Aristotelous Square
The grand seafront square at the heart of the city, a sweep of arcaded buildings opening to the sea, designed after the 1917 fire by the French architect Ernest Hébrard and built mostly in the 1950s.
Aristotelous Square, Plateia Aristotelous, is the main square of Thessaloniki and almost a symbol of the city, opening to the sea on the waterfront avenue. It was conceived after the Great Fire of 1917, when the old maze of Ottoman streets burned and a new European-style plan was drawn up under the French architect Ernest Hébrard. He designed a grand monumental axis running from the seafront up toward the Roman Forum and the Byzantine Upper Town.
Hébrard's drawings were ambitious, and what was finally built, mostly in the 1950s, was more modest, but the square's sweep of arcaded buildings in a Byzantine-influenced style remains one of the most striking urban spaces in Greece. Its two curved sides are anchored by the Electra Palace Hotel and the Olympion cinema, home of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. It is the city's living room, lined with cafés and the stage for its festivals, rallies and New Year celebrations.
Did you know? Aristotelous Square was conceived after the Great Fire of 1917 as part of a new European-style plan for the city under the French architect Ernest Hébrard, who laid out a grand axis from the sea to the Upper Town.
