The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, in a 1962 building near the waterfront, holds the finds of ancient Macedonia from prehistory to Roman times. Its most famous treasure is the Derveni Krater, a 40-kilogram bronze vessel of the late fourth century BC, worked in dazzling relief with Dionysus, Ariadne, dancing maenads and satyrs, its high tin content giving it a golden sheen without any gold; it was used as a funerary urn.
The museum also displays the Derveni Papyrus, a carbonised philosophical scroll of around 340 BC, Europe's oldest surviving manuscript, preserved by the fire of a funeral pyre and listed in UNESCO's Memory of the World. Its 'Gold of Macedon' galleries shine with wreaths, masks and jewellery from the tombs of Sindos, Derveni and other sites, and a shaded courtyard shows Roman sarcophagi and statues.
