About St Bridget's Convent
The towering ruin of a 15th-century Bridgettine convent in Pirita, once said to be the largest in Livonia, sacked and burned by Ivan the Terrible's troops in 1577.
St Bridget's Convent (Pirita klooster) in Tallinn's Pirita district was a Bridgettine convent dedicated to Saint Bridget of Sweden. The idea came from Tallinn merchants around 1400, and in 1407 two monks from Vadstena Abbey in Sweden arrived to advise them. A permit to quarry dolomite was granted in 1417, construction was supervised by the architect Heinrich Swalbart, and the main church was consecrated in 1436 by Heinrich II, Bishop of Tallinn. As a double monastery it housed both nuns and monks.
With a floor area of about 1,360 square metres, it is described as the largest convent in Livonia, its church the largest church building in medieval Estonia. During the Livonian War in 1577 it was attacked, looted and burned by Russian troops under Ivan the Terrible, and it has stood as a ruin ever since, its tall west gable the most striking survivor. A new, active Bridgettine convent opened nearby in the early 2000s.
