About Kumu Art Museum

The main building of the Art Museum of Estonia, opened in 2006 in a limestone-and-copper wedge cut into a hillside; it was named European Museum of the Year in 2008.

Kumu is the main building of the Art Museum of Estonia (Eesti Kunstimuuseum). Its name is a portmanteau of the Estonian word kunstimuuseum, art museum. The Finnish architect Pekka Vapaavuori won the international competition for the design in 1994, and the building was constructed between 2003 and 2006, opening on 17 February 2006. It is set into the limestone slope of Lasnamäe hill at the edge of Kadriorg Park, so visitors can enter both from the park below and from the top of the escarpment. Its exterior combines Estonian dolomitic limestone with copper and glass.

In 2008 Kumu received the European Museum of the Year Award from the European Museum Forum. Its permanent collection covers Estonian art from the early 18th century onward, including work made during the 1940-1991 Soviet occupation, and notably sets official Socialist Realism beside Soviet-era Nonconformist art. The museum also stages temporary exhibitions of Estonian and international modern and contemporary art.

Did you know? Kumu opened on 17 February 2006 in a limestone-and-copper building set into Lasnamäe hill by the Finnish architect Pekka Vapaavuori, who had won the design competition back in 1994.
