About Seaplane Harbour
A maritime museum inside vast 1910s seaplane hangars, their domed concrete roofs spanning about 36 metres; a real submarine, a seaplane replica and an icebreaker fill the halls.
The Seaplane Harbour (Lennusadam) is a maritime museum in Tallinn and a branch of the Estonian Maritime Museum. It occupies seaplane hangars built in 1916-1917 as part of Peter the Great's Naval Fortress, which defended Tallinn during the First World War. The hangars' reinforced-concrete thin-shell domes span about 36 metres without internal supports and were among the first large-scale reinforced-concrete shell structures in the world. The exhibition halls cover about 8,000 square metres across three interlinked domes.
The collection centres on the submarine Lembit, ordered by Estonia from the United Kingdom in the 1930s and restored to its 1930s appearance, and a full-scale replica of a First World War Short Type 184 seaplane. Older exhibits include the 16th-century Maasilinn wreck, while the steam icebreaker Suur Tõll, donated by Finland in 1922, is moored outside. The complex fell out of use in the Soviet era; renovation began in 2010 and the museum, converted by KOKO Architects, opened on 12 May 2012.
Did you know? The three domed halls are former seaplane hangars built in 1916-1917 for Peter the Great's Naval Fortress; their thin concrete shells span about 36 metres with no internal supports.
