About Tallinn Song Festival Grounds

A vast open-air arena crowned by a great arched stage built for over 15,000 singers; it hosts Estonia's Song Festival and was a heart of the 1988 Singing Revolution.

The Tallinn Song Festival Grounds (Lauluväljak) is the main venue of the Estonian Song Festival, or Laulupidu, a choral tradition begun in 1869 by Johann Voldemar Jannsen and still held about every five years. The Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian song and dance celebrations were proclaimed a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003. The present arched stage was built in 1959 and first used at the festival in 1960; designed by Henno Sepmann with Alar Kotli and Endel Paalmann, it was made to hold more than 15,000 singers at once.

The grounds can gather audiences of roughly 75,000, rising toward 100,000 at the largest festivals. On the northern side stands a 42-metre light tower, open to the public, and a monument honours the conductor and composer Gustav Ernesaks, a central figure of the movement. During the 1988 Singing Revolution huge crowds gathered here to sing patriotic Estonian songs in peaceful protest against Soviet rule.

Did you know? Estonia's Song Festival, the Laulupidu, has been held since 1869 and takes place about every five years; in 2003 UNESCO proclaimed the Baltic song and dance celebrations a masterpiece of intangible heritage.
