About Estonian Open Air Museum
A 72-hectare living museum by the sea at Rocca al Mare, where historic farms, windmills, a wooden chapel and a working tavern recreate centuries of Estonian rural life.
The Estonian Open Air Museum (Eesti Vabaõhumuuseum) is a museum of vernacular rural architecture at Rocca al Mare, in Tallinn. It was founded on 22 May 1957 and opened to the public in August 1964, and now covers about 72 hectares of parkland. The grounds present reconstructed farmyards, fishing-village net sheds and public buildings representing 18th- to 20th-century rural life across Estonia. The buildings are original historic structures dismantled at their source sites and re-erected here, arranged by region.
Among them, the wooden Sutlepa chapel, documented since 1670, is one of the oldest wooden buildings in Estonia, and the Kolu tavern, built in the 1840s and moved here in 1968, works as a real inn. The collection also includes historic windmills such as the Nätsi and Kalma mills. More recent additions extend the timeline, including a Soviet-era kolkhoz apartment block and a modern prefabricated wooden house. The site functions as a living-history museum with costumed activities, crafts and farm animals.
