About San Leo Fortress

San Leo, a hilltop town and fortress in Italy about 10 km from San Marino, rebuilt for Federico da Montefeltro, and a papal prison where the adventurer Cagliostro died in 1795.

San Leo is a town in the Italian province of Rimini, about 10 km in a straight line from the City of San Marino, on a rock about 600 m high. Its fortress was rebuilt for Federico da Montefeltro by Francesco di Giorgio Martini for the age of cannon, and from 1631 it served as a papal prison.

Count Cagliostro, condemned by the Inquisition, died here on 26 August 1795 in a cell called the Pozzetto. Tradition makes Saint Leo the companion of Marinus. The fortress is a ticketed museum with seasonal hours; the Romanesque cathedral and parish church stand in the village.
