About Funivia (Cable Car)

The Funivia, the cable car that climbs in about two minutes from Borgo Maggiore to the City of San Marino, running since 1959 with wide views over the Romagna hills and the Adriatic coast.

The Funivia links Borgo Maggiore with the City of San Marino on a line of 338 m, climbing 166 m in about two minutes, with cars about every 15 minutes. It opened on 1 August 1959, was rebuilt in 1996 with larger cars and modernised again in 2017.

It carries about half a million passengers a year and replaced the link once made by the Rimini to San Marino railway, which stopped in 1944. It is run by the state company AASS; it pauses for maintenance once a year and in strong wind or ice, so check before you rely on it.

Did you know? The first passenger of San Marino's cable car, in 1959, was a statue of Our Lady of Fatima, brought to Borgo Maggiore by helicopter.
