About Basilica di San Marino and the Church of San Pietro
The neoclassical Basilica of Saint Marinus (1838), with the founder's relics, and the small church of San Pietro beside it, where two beds cut in the rock are said to be those of Marinus and Leo.
The Basilica of Saint Marinus was built in 1826-1838 on the site of a much older church, documented as the parish church by 1113. A portico of eight Corinthian columns leads into three naves. Under the altar lie relics of Saint Marinus, found in 1586, and a statue of the saint by Adamo Tadolini stands above it.
Beside the steps, the small church of San Pietro has an apse cut into the rock, with two stone beds that tradition gives to Saints Marinus and Leo. The basilica is free to visit and is used for the ceremonies of the Captains Regent; dress modestly.
Did you know? The pediment of the basilica is dedicated to Saint Marinus as patron and founder of liberty, the idea at the heart of the republic.
