About Montale (Third Tower)
The Montale, the smallest of San Marino's three towers, standing alone in the woods on the last summit of Mount Titano, with a deep prison inside; it is seen only from outside.
The Montale, or Third Tower, is the smallest of the three, on the last summit of Mount Titano. Until the 13th or 14th century it was a separate small fort; in 1320 a long wall joined it to the other two. It guarded the city against the Malatesta, who held the nearby castle of Fiorentino.
Inside, beyond its single gate, is a prison several metres deep, reached only from above. Restored in 1743, 1817 and 1935, the Montale is closed inside and is seen from the path beyond the Cesta. It is quiet and much less visited than the other towers.
Did you know? The Montale's prison, the bottom of the tower, was several metres deep and could be reached only from above: prisoners were lowered into it.
