About Cesta (Second Tower)
The Cesta, the Second Tower, on the highest summit of Mount Titano at about 750 m, a medieval fortress on an old lookout site that houses the Museum of Ancient Arms.
The Cesta, or Second Tower, crowns the highest summit of Mount Titano, at about 750 m. Its name suggests a lookout of Roman times, and a document of 1253 already names it. In 1320 it gained a high outer wall joined to the city's second ring of defences; it was restored in 1924-25.
Since 1956 it has housed the Museum of Ancient Arms, with about 700 weapons and pieces of armour from the 13th to the 19th century. Tower and museum are visited with a State Museums ticket, and the outside can always be seen from the path.
Did you know? The Museum of Ancient Arms in the Cesta holds a rare child's breastplate made around 1540 in the royal armour workshop at Greenwich, in England.
