About Palazzo Pubblico and Piazza della Libertà
The Palazzo Pubblico, San Marino's town hall and seat of government (1884-1894), on Piazza della Libertà with the Statue of Liberty, where the two Captains Regent are announced twice a year.
The Palazzo Pubblico was built in 1884-1894 to a design by the Roman architect Francesco Azzurri, in the style of medieval town halls, on the site of an older palace of the 14th century. It is the seat of the Captains Regent, the Great and General Council and the government, and a restoration by Gae Aulenti ended in 1996.
In front, on Piazza della Libertà, stands the marble Statue of Liberty of 1876. In summer the Guardia di Rocca changes guard here. The interior has been closed for restoration at times, and it also closes for official ceremonies, so check before you go; the square is always open.
Did you know? Twice a year, on 1 April and 1 October, the names of San Marino's two new Captains Regent are announced from the balcony of the Palazzo Pubblico.
