About Borgo Maggiore
Borgo Maggiore, the old market town at the foot of Mount Titano, once called Mercatale, with its weekly Thursday market, clock tower and arcades, and the lower station of the cable car.
Borgo Maggiore grew up in the 12th century as Mercatale, the marketplace, below the city on the mountain, and it took its present name in 1879. A market is recorded here as early as the 1240s, and every Thursday morning stalls still fill the Piazza Grande.
Its clock tower of 1896 is by Francesco Azzurri, architect of the Palazzo Pubblico, and arcades line the old streets. Garibaldi stopped here in 1849. The cable car runs from here to the city in two minutes; buses also link it with Rimini.
