About The Old Railway and the Galleria Montale

The old electric railway from Rimini to San Marino (1932-1944), and its restored last stretch through the Galleria Montale tunnel, where a historic railcar runs again on a short heritage trip.

From 1932 to 1944 an electric narrow-gauge railway of about 31 km climbed from Rimini to San Marino through 17 tunnels. Damaged by bombing in 1943-44, it was never rebuilt, though an agreement of 1953 called it only suspended. During the war its tunnels sheltered refugees.

In 2012 volunteers restored about 800 m of track at the old San Marino station, including the 502 m Galleria Montale tunnel, and a restored railcar of 1931 runs short trips again. Rides are seasonal and limited, so check before you go; the tunnel portal and the old station square can be seen at any time.

Did you know? Italy paid for the Rimini to San Marino railway, and in return received the right to run a radio station in San Marino for ten years.
