About Mount Titano and the UNESCO Historic Centre

Mount Titano and the historic centre of San Marino, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, and the story of how a small mountain republic kept its freedom for centuries.

Mount Titano is a limestone ridge of the Apennines about 13 km from the Adriatic, with a tower on each of its three peaks. In 2008 UNESCO listed the San Marino Historic Centre and Mount Titano as a World Heritage Site, as a witness to the continuity of a free republic since the Middle Ages.

San Marino claims to be the oldest surviving republic: tradition says it was founded in 301, and Captains Regent are documented from 1243. It refused Napoleon's offer to enlarge it in 1797 and sheltered Garibaldi in 1849. Much of the centre was restored between about 1880 and the 1930s.

Did you know? In 1797 Napoleon offered to enlarge San Marino's territory, and the republic thanked him and politely declined, wisely preferring to stay small and free.
