About The Three Brothers

Three adjoining houses spanning the late 1400s to the 1600s form Riga's oldest group of dwelling houses; the family of brothers behind the nickname is pure legend.

The Three Brothers are a row of three adjoining houses at Maza Pils iela 17, 19 and 21 that together form the oldest complex of dwelling houses in Riga. No. 17, the oldest, dates from around 1490 and shows crow-stepped gables and Gothic detailing; No. 19 followed about 1646, with a stone portal added in 1746 and the inscription 'Soli Deo Gloria'; the narrow No. 21 gained its Baroque look later in the 17th century. The lane once lay on the medieval edge of Riga, an area of craftsmen's homes.

The oldest house was restored in 1955-1957 by architect Peteris Saulitis. Today No. 21 houses the Latvian Museum of Architecture, and the complex also holds the State Inspection for Heritage Protection. The row was awarded the European Heritage Label in 2020 and lies within the Historic Centre of Riga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Its 'brothers' name derives from local legend rather than record.

Did you know? Read right to left, the three houses show two centuries of change: No. 17 (about 1490) is Gothic, No. 19 (about 1646) Dutch Mannerist, and No. 21 later Baroque, the narrowest and youngest of the set.
