About St Peter's Church
The spire crowning Riga's skyline looks medieval but is a 1970s steel reconstruction with a lift; a viewing gallery at seventy-two metres opens the whole Old Town below.
St Peter's Church, first mentioned in 1209, is one of the oldest and most valued monuments of Brick Gothic architecture in the Baltics. Its tower has been rebuilt repeatedly: a wooden steeple of 1491 gave way after the tower collapsed in 1666, killing eight; a Baroque spire raised in 1686-1690 was said to rank among the tallest wooden structures in Europe before lightning burned it in 1721.
Artillery destroyed the church and tower in June 1941. The present tower is a steel reconstruction completed in 1973, fitted with a lift to a viewing gallery at about 72 metres; the structure reaches roughly 123 metres and is topped by a golden weathercock. The building now serves as a Lutheran church and a venue for exhibitions and concerts, within the Historic Centre of Riga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
Did you know? The reconstructed tower was completed in 1973, exactly thirty-two years after German artillery destroyed the original in June 1941, and this time the spire was built not of wood but of welded steel.
