About House of the Blackheads
Riga's most ornate facade, on Town Hall Square, looks medieval but was rebuilt in the 1990s; the fourteenth-century original was bombed in 1941 and its ruins cleared by the Soviets.
The House of the Blackheads stands on Town Hall Square in Riga's Old Town, facing the reconstructed Town Hall. First mentioned in 1334, it served as a warehouse and meeting hall for the city's merchants, and from 1477 belonged to the Brotherhood of Blackheads, a guild of unmarried merchants, shipowners and foreign traders. Its stepped Dutch Mannerist gable and much of the decorative facade date from renovations around 1620, while many of the sculptures were produced in the nineteenth century by the workshop of August Volz.
The original building was bombed to a ruin in June 1941 and its remains demolished by the Soviet authorities in 1948. The structure seen today is a full reconstruction, built between 1996 and 1999 from old drawings and photographs and reopened for Riga's 800th anniversary. Only the fourteenth-century cellar survives from the original. The house lies within the Historic Centre of Riga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
Did you know? When the house was rebuilt in the 1990s, thousands of residents symbolically bought a single brick to fund the work, putting their names into the walls of a building the whole city chose to resurrect.
