About Powder Tower

The only surviving tower of Riga's medieval city walls, rebuilt in 1650 with old cannonballs still lodged in its brick, now home to the Latvian War Museum and its 25,000 objects.

The Powder Tower (Pulvertornis) is the only surviving tower of Riga's medieval city fortifications and one of the oldest structures in the city. It was first mentioned in 1330 as the Sand Tower, guarding the sand road into Riga. Destroyed down to its basement during the Polish-Swedish War in 1621, the tower seen today was rebuilt in 1650. It was renamed after gunpowder was stored inside during the 17th century, and weapons were kept there until 1883. The brick tower stands about 25.6 metres tall and 14.3 metres in diameter, with walls up to three metres thick and cannonballs embedded in its outer face.

In 1892 it was leased to the Rubonia student corporation, and between 1937 and 1940 it was renovated and integrated into the Latvian War Museum building. Founded in 1916 as the Latvian Riflemen Museum, the museum has occupied the tower since 1919 and opened to the public in 1921. Its collection of more than 25,000 items focuses on Latvia's 20th-century military and political history and its two struggles for independence.

Did you know? The Powder Tower is the last of Riga's medieval wall towers still standing; it was first mentioned in 1330 as the Sand Tower, guarding the sand road into the city.
