About Freedom Monument

A 42-metre column crowned by 'Milda,' a copper Liberty lifting three gilded stars for Latvia's three regions; unveiled in 1935, it survived the entire Soviet era.

The Freedom Monument (Brīvības piemineklis) honours the soldiers killed in the Latvian War of Independence (1918-1920) and stands as a central symbol of Latvian freedom and sovereignty. Designed by the sculptor Kārlis Zāle, whose winning entry was titled 'Shine like a star,' it was built between 1931 and 1935 and unveiled on 18 November 1935, Latvia's independence day. Financed largely by public donations, it rises about 42 metres in granite, travertine and copper. A 19-metre travertine column is topped by a copper figure of Liberty, nicknamed 'Milda,' holding up three gilded stars for the historical regions of Vidzeme, Latgale and Courland.

The base carries the inscription 'Tēvzemei un Brīvībai' (For Fatherland and Freedom), with sculptures and reliefs arranged in thirteen groups depicting Latvian history. Built where a statue of Peter the Great once stood, the monument survived the entire Soviet era despite demolition proposals recorded in 1949 and 1963. In June 1987 about 5,000 people gathered here to lay flowers, a landmark in the independence movement. A Guard of Honour, first present in 1935-1940, was renewed in 1992.

Did you know? The copper Liberty is affectionately known as 'Milda.' Her three gilded stars represent Latvia's three historical regions: Vidzeme, Latgale and Courland, held above a column that rises some 42 metres.
