About St James's Cathedral
Riga's red-brick Roman Catholic cathedral, dedicated in 1225, wears a green spire and a metal rooster, and hangs a medieval alarm bell on the outside of its tower.
St James's Cathedral (Svētā Jēkaba katedrāle) is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Riga, dedicated to Saint James the Greater and the seat of its Metropolitan Archbishop. Built in Brick Gothic style from red brick, it was dedicated in 1225. Over the centuries the church changed hands repeatedly: in 1523 it became the first Latvian-language Lutheran church in Riga, passed to the Catholics and Jesuits under Polish rule in 1582, and returned to the Lutherans under Swedish rule in 1621.
Following the 1923 Latvian church property referendum, the building was handed to the Catholics, and the first Catholic mass was celebrated in 1924. Its green spire is topped by a metal rooster carried over from its Lutheran centuries. The cathedral forms part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Riga and stands opposite the House of the Livonian Noble Corporation, now home to the Saeima, Latvia's parliament. It was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1993 and Pope Francis in 2018.
Did you know? A fifteenth-century bell hangs outside the tower under a small canopy rather than inside the belfry; it once served as the town alarm and summoned crowds to executions on Town Hall Square.
