About The Swedish Gate

Built in 1698 under Swedish rule, this narrow archway tunnels beneath a house and is the only one of Riga's many medieval city gates still standing today.

The Swedish Gate was built in 1698, during the period of Swedish rule over Riga, as part of the city wall, providing access to soldiers' barracks that lay outside the defences. It takes the form of a single barrel-vaulted archway, wide enough for only one carriage at a time, and is cut through a residential building at Torna iela 11. As Riga expanded in the 19th century, most of its fortification walls and other gates were dismantled, leaving the Swedish Gate as the only surviving city gate.

The gate stands beside Jacob's Barracks, a long complex once built for soldiers and now occupied by cafes, bars and shops, and near the only substantial surviving section of Riga's medieval wall, anchored by the Ramer Tower, restored in 1985-1987. The gate features in Henning Mankell's crime novel 'The Dogs of Riga'. It lies within the Historic Centre of Riga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

Did you know? When Riga outgrew its defences in the 19th century, its fortification walls and gates were dismantled one by one; of the several city gates that once pierced the walls, only the Swedish Gate survives.
