About Riga Cathedral

Founded in 1211, this broad brick cathedral is widely called the largest medieval church in the Baltics; its 6,718-pipe Walcker organ still fills the nave at regular concerts.

Riga Cathedral was founded in 1211 by Bishop Albert and built over several centuries, combining Romanesque, Brick Gothic and later Baroque elements. It is the seat of the archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia and is widely described as the largest medieval church in the Baltic states. Its tower is crowned by a golden weathercock, and the adjoining cloister and former monastery buildings house the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation.

The cathedral is renowned for its pipe organ, built by E.F. Walcker & Co of Ludwigsburg in 1882-1884 and inaugurated in 1884. With 124 stops, four manuals and pedal, and 6,718 pipes, it was reputedly the largest organ in the world at its completion, and it is still used for regular concerts. The cathedral gives its name to Cathedral Square, the largest square in the Old Town, and lies within the Historic Centre of Riga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

Did you know? The cathedral's Walcker organ has 6,718 pipes, 124 stops and four manuals; at its inauguration in 1884 it was, by common account, the largest organ in the world, and it still gives regular concerts.
