About Latvian National Museum of Art

Latvia's largest art collection, in a Baroque palace of a building on the Esplanade park, purpose-built for art in 1905 and dramatically reworked underground by 2016.

The Latvian National Museum of Art is the largest repository of national art in Latvia. Its main building, on the edge of the Esplanade park in central Riga, was purpose-built as an art museum between 1903 and 1905, designed by Baltic German architect Wilhelm Neumann, who became its first director. Built in a Baroque and historicist style, it carries a sculptural group by August Volz on its central pediment. The institution itself traces its origins to 1869, when it opened as the Riga City Art Gallery.

Its collection focuses on Latvian and Baltic art from the 18th to the mid-20th century, including works by Vilhelms Purvītis, Janis Rozentāls and Johans Valters. Between 2013 and 2016 the building underwent a major reconstruction, reopening on 4 May 2016. The Lithuanian practice Processoffice added a two-level underground block with exhibition halls, storage and conservation rooms, along with modern touches such as a glass floor and a rooftop level; the project won the Grand Prize of the 2016 Latvian Architecture Award.

Did you know? The main building was purpose-built as an art museum between 1903 and 1905 by Baltic German architect Wilhelm Neumann, who then went on to serve as the museum's first director.
