About Riga Art Nouveau Centre

A museum inside a restored 1903 apartment on Alberta iela, recreating an Art Nouveau home in full, from a painted spiral staircase down to the door handles.

The Riga Art Nouveau Centre occupies Alberta iela 12, a building designed in 1903 by Latvian architect Konstantīns Pēkšēns together with Eižens Laube as Pēkšēns's own residence. The museum recreates an authentic furnished apartment of 1903, letting visitors experience a well-off Riga household of the period, complete with period furniture, tiled stoves and decorative fittings. Its centrepiece is a painted spiral staircase, one of the most photographed Art Nouveau interiors in the city.

The facade carries ornamental reliefs with stylised motifs of plants and animals found in Latvia. Alongside the reconstructed apartment, the centre presents a modern digital exposition on Riga's Jugendstil heritage. It opened at Alberta iela 12 in April 2009 and stands on the same street as Mikhail Eisenstein's showcase Art Nouveau apartment houses. The centre is operated within Riga's municipal cultural framework, and its architect, Pēkšēns, was among the most productive builders of early-twentieth-century Riga.
