About Latvian Academy of Sciences

A 108-metre Stalinist 'wedding-cake' tower, the first skyscraper in Soviet Latvia, crowned by a public 17th-floor terrace that looks out over the whole of Riga.

The Latvian Academy of Sciences building is a Stalinist high-rise in the Maskavas forštate district of Riga. Built through the 1950s and completed around 1961, it was the first skyscraper in the Latvian SSR, rising about 108 metres over 21 storeys. It was designed by architects Osvalds Tīlmanis, Vaidelotis Apsītis and Kārlis Plūksne in the Socialist Classicism style and closely resembles Moscow's 'Seven Sisters', especially the main building of Moscow State University.

Its facade combines Soviet symbols such as the hammer and sickle with Latvian folk ornament. The spire originally carried a wreath and a five-pointed star, which were removed after Latvia regained independence in 1991. Locals nickname the tower 'Stalin's Birthday Cake'. A public observation terrace on the 17th floor, at about 65 metres, offers panoramic views of the city for a modest ticket. The building housed the Academy of Sciences founded in 1946 and long remained Riga's tallest structure.

Did you know? Completed around 1961, the tower was the first skyscraper in Soviet Latvia; at roughly 108 metres over 21 storeys, it long stood as the tallest building in the whole city.
