About Mežaparks Great Bandstand

The vast open-air stage in Mežaparks where tens of thousands of singers gather for Latvia's Song and Dance Festival, rebuilt in 2021 as the striking 'Silver Grove'.

The Mežaparks Great Bandstand is a large open-air stage in Mežaparks, a forested garden-suburb park in the north of Riga, and the principal venue of the Latvian Song and Dance Festival. That festival tradition dates to the first celebration held in Riga in 1873, which featured 1,003 singers, and is normally held every five years. The Baltic song and dance celebrations of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania were inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.

A permanent bandstand was first built here in the mid-1950s, when the festival's main concerts moved to the venue. The current stage is a full reconstruction, the 'Silver Grove' project designed by architects Austra Mailītis and Juris Poga, unveiled on 21 June 2021 and winner of that year's Latvian Architecture Award. It can hold roughly 14,000 singers and offers around 30,000 seats, with transformable systems allowing far larger standing crowds. Beyond the festival, the venue also hosts major concerts.
