About Alberta iela (Art Nouveau District)

A short, showy street where ordinary apartment houses wear screaming stone faces, sphinxes and peacocks: Riga's most theatrical Art Nouveau, much of it by the engineer Mikhail Eisenstein.

Alberta iela is a short street in central Riga, about 255 metres long, laid out and built up in a single burst from 1901 during the city's rapid pre-First World War expansion. It is named after Bishop Albert of Riga, traditionally regarded as the city's founder in 1201. The street is celebrated for its concentration of flamboyant Art Nouveau apartment houses, several protected as architectural monuments of national significance; their facades carry mascarons, sphinxes, peacocks and flowing plant motifs.

Several of the most theatrical buildings, including numbers 2a, 4, 6, 8 and 13, were designed between 1903 and 1906 by the Russian civil engineer Mikhail Eisenstein, father of the film director Sergei Eisenstein. The philosopher Isaiah Berlin spent part of his early childhood at number 2a, and the writer Zenta Mauriņa lived at number 1. Today the street also houses foreign embassies and academic institutions. The historic centre of Riga, including its Art Nouveau districts, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.

Did you know? The most theatrical facades were designed by Mikhail Eisenstein, a Russian civil engineer. His son Sergei grew up to become a pioneering Soviet film director, so the family produced spectacle at two very different scales.
