About Riga Central Market
One of Europe's biggest markets, spread across five great pavilions roofed with the salvaged upper frames of old German Zeppelin hangars, plus a sprawling web of outdoor stalls.
Riga Central Market is one of the largest markets in Europe, built between 1924 and 1930 and opened on 10 November 1930. Its five main pavilions reused the salvaged upper metal frameworks of German First World War Zeppelin hangars, brought from the former air base at Vaiņode; only the upper parts were adapted, set atop new pavilions of stone and reinforced concrete that blend Neoclassicism and Art Deco. The five halls were assigned to dairy, meat, fish, vegetables and gastronomy.
The whole site covers roughly 100,500 square metres and includes an extensive basement network. The market forms part of the Historic Centre of Riga, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997, and was designated a cultural monument in 1983. It is operated by the municipal company Rīgas nami, and the Gastronomy Pavilion reopened in January 2019 after renovation. As of mid-2026 the Meat Pavilion was closed for structural repairs, with meat sales moved into the Vegetable Pavilion.
Did you know? The five pavilions reused only the salvaged upper metal frames of German First World War Zeppelin hangars, brought from the Vaiņode air base and set atop entirely new stone-and-concrete buildings.
