About Kalnciema Quarter

A restored cluster of 19th-century wooden houses across the river in Pārdaugava, best known for its lively Saturday farmers' and crafts market and open-air events.

Kalnciema Quarter is a restored ensemble of 19th-century wooden buildings on the left bank of the Daugava, in the Āgenskalns part of Riga's Pārdaugava. It preserves one of the few surviving clusters of the city's historic wooden architecture. The buildings date largely from the late 1800s, in a neighbourhood that was historically home to merchants and craftsmen along the city's trade routes. It takes its name from Kalnciema iela, the street around which the houses stand.

From the early 2000s a private family restoration initiative revived the then-neglected buildings while keeping their historical character, and the site is now presented as a model of heritage-led regeneration in Pārdaugava. It functions as a cultural and market venue, hosting a popular Saturday farmers' and crafts market that sells Latvian farm produce and handmade goods, along with open-air concerts, festivals, exhibitions, cinema and seasonal events. The complex also includes design shops, a restaurant and an architect's studio.

Did you know? The quarter preserves one of the few surviving clusters of Riga's historic wooden architecture, most of its painted timber houses dating from the late 1800s along Kalnciema iela.
