About Roman Theatre of Philippopolis
The Roman theatre of Philippopolis, cut into the saddle between two of the Old Town hills, with marble seat rows facing south to the Rhodope Mountains and still used for summer performances.
The theatre dates from the late first or early second century AD. Its semicircle, 82 metres across, held 28 rows of marble seats for perhaps 5,000 to 7,000 people. Much of it was destroyed at the end of the fourth century, and it lay buried until excavations began in 1968.
Outside performances it is open to visitors with a ticket, but it can close for rehearsals and evening events. In summer it hosts opera, plays and concerts. The marble seats are steep and uneven, with little shade.
