About Dzhumaya Mosque

The Dzhumaya Mosque, the Friday mosque of Plovdiv beside the Roman stadium, one of the oldest Ottoman buildings in the Balkans, with nine domes and a minaret of patterned brick.

Its date is disputed: some sources put it soon after the Ottoman conquest in the 1360s, others in the 1430s under Sultan Murad II. The prayer hall, about 33 by 27 metres, has nine domes on four pillars, and the walls alternate bands of brick and cut stone. It was restored from 2006 to 2008.

It is a working mosque. Visitors are generally welcome outside prayer times; avoid Friday midday prayer. Cover your shoulders and knees, take off your shoes and keep quiet inside.
