About Nebet Tepe
Nebet Tepe, the rocky hilltop at the north end of the Old Town, where the earliest settlement of Plovdiv began, with fortress walls, a postern tunnel and wide views over the city.
People lived on the hill from about 4000 BC. A Thracian town grew here later, and from the fourth century BC the hill became the citadel of Philippopolis. The remains include walls of huge fitted stones, a large water reservoir and a sixth-century tunnel thought to lead towards the river.
The site reopened after restoration in March 2025 and entry is free. Guided tours need a reservation. Hours are shorter in winter, and the paths are uneven and slippery after rain or frost.
