About Kapana
Kapana, the old craftsmen's quarter of Plovdiv just north of Dzhumaya Square, a tangle of lanes named after old trades and now full of cafes, galleries, workshops and street art.
Kapana grew as the bazaar of the city's craftsmen, and its streets still carry the names of trades such as ironsmiths, furriers and goldsmiths. In the 1970s a plan to replace it was dropped after citizens argued to save it, and from 2014 it became a district for artists and creative work.
It is a public quarter with no fixed hours. Galleries and shops keep their own times, while cafes and bars stay open late. Weekend evenings are crowded.
Did you know? The lanes of Kapana in Plovdiv are named after old trades, such as Zhelezarska, the street of the ironsmiths, and Zlatarska, the street of the goldsmiths.
