About Church of Saints Constantine and Helena
The Church of Saints Constantine and Helena, beside the Hisar Kapia gate in the Old Town, on one of the oldest Christian sites in Plovdiv, with a painted porch and a gilded carved iconostasis.
Tradition says a first church stood here in 337, and archaeologists date the first sanctuary to the mid-fourth century. The present church was built in 1832, after leading Bulgarians of the city obtained the sultan's permission to rebuild the ruined old one. Its icons are linked to the painter Zahari Zograf and other Revival masters.
There are no fixed visiting hours; the church is usually open in the daytime but may be closed to visitors during services. Dress modestly and do not take photographs during services.
