About Great Basilica of Philippopolis

The Great Basilica of Philippopolis, the largest early Christian church found in Bulgaria, from the fourth century, now under a modern museum building with about 2,000 square metres of mosaic floors.

The church was built in the mid-fourth century and was probably the cathedral of the city's bishop. It was abandoned in the sixth century, probably after an earthquake. Its floor mosaics, in two layers, show geometric patterns, vases and many birds. A museum building over the ruins opened in April 2021.

The museum needs a ticket, and a combined ticket also covers the Small Basilica. Hours may be shorter in winter. Glass walkways let you look down on both mosaic layers.
