About Asen's Fortress
Asen's Fortress, a medieval stronghold on a rocky ridge above the Asenitsa gorge near Asenovgrad, crowned by the twelfth-century Church of the Holy Mother of God with fourteenth-century frescoes.
The rock was used from Thracian times. The fortress takes its name from Tsar Ivan Asen II, whose rock-cut inscription records repairs in 1231. The best-preserved building is the two-storey church, usually dated to the twelfth century, with banded stone and brick walls and fourteenth-century frescoes.
You buy a ticket on site. The climb on stone steps is steep and slippery when wet, and hours are shorter in winter. The church is used for worship.
