About Laodicea on the Lycus
A vast, still-active excavation ten kilometres from Hierapolis, and one of Revelation's Seven Churches, famously rebuked as 'lukewarm'. Colonnaded streets, two theatres and a huge stadium have re-emerged.
Laodicea on the Lycus lies about 10 kilometres south of Hierapolis, on a plateau above the Çürüksu (Lycus) river near its confluence with the Maeander. Founded by the Seleucid king Antiochus II around the mid-3rd century BC and named after his wife Laodice, it became a wealthy Roman commercial city known for banking, textiles and a medical school. A severe earthquake in AD 60 destroyed the town, which, according to Tacitus, was rebuilt at its citizens' own expense.
Laodicea was one of the Seven Churches of Asia addressed in the Book of Revelation, where its congregation is called 'lukewarm'. Excavations since 2003, led by Celal Şimşek of Pamukkale University, have exposed colonnaded streets, a nymphaeum, temples, two theatres, a large stadium and an early Christian church dated by the excavators to Constantine's reign. The site entered Turkey's UNESCO Tentative List in 2013.
Did you know? Revelation calls the Laodicean church 'neither hot nor cold' but 'lukewarm'. A popular sermon ties this to the city's tepid, mineral-laden water, contrasted with hot Hierapolis and cold Colossae, but that reading is interpretation, not proven fact.
